We’ve all been there: caught behind a big semi-trailer on the highway, forced to lower our speed and let the frustration sink in, as if it’s the worst thing in the world. If you’re stuck in one lane, then it possibly could be. In this case, some drivers get risky and attempt to overtake the truck by moving out from behind it to see if the road is clear before passing. With that comes the danger of driving into a path of oncoming traffic, but thanks to Samsung Electronics, that’s about to change. The electronics company came up with the idea of mounting cameras on the front of a truck, while attaching large screens to the rear, to display a clear view of the road ahead to trailing drivers.

Dubbed the “Safety Truck,” the view is enabled both day and night, and has the potential to reduce overtaking accidents, as well as providing drivers behind the trailer with information on road hazards well in time for them to react.

After testing the prototype in Argentina, where there are hundreds of one-lane roads, Samsung believes the test vehicle is no longer operational, since it’s proven to work. However, there are plans to carry out further tests that will have the technology comply with the appropriate road authorities for use on highways.
Currently there have been no announcements as to when, or if, this system will be made commercially available, or at what cost.
