Sneaky credit-card spy camera found in NYC subway

Why you should hold your wallet closer when taking public transportation

A credit-card-reading camera device was found above a MetroCard machine at the 59th Street Columbus Circle station in NYC. It was expertly stashed inside of a power outlet before a civilian noticed it and ripped it from the wall and reported it to the officials. A card-skimming gadget that was installed in one of the automated machines was found by the MTA. The camera would enable thieves to view the machine user’s zip code and PIN number, while the skimmer would obtain the credit-card’s information.

This recent attempt to discreetly steal credit card info wans't the first infraction of its kind found on machines near public transportation. Long Island Railroad officials found dozens of seemingly inconspicuous cameras and skimmers on ticket vending machines last November. The Metro North train system has also a similar incident like this last year. Technology is just making stealing more of a highfalutin game for thieves. So when you're purchasing tickets from any ticket machine, scout it out for randomly placed wires, strange looking things protruding from the machine, and keep your eyes peeled for bizarrely placed cameras before swiping your card.
