Image of the Day: Gigantic, robotic Lego snake

New Lego kit pairs Apple devices with popular toy building kit

The image above is Lego’s new Mindstorms EV3 kit. While it’s impressive to look at, the reason why it’s showing up on an electronics website is because the set actually possesses the ability to connect via Bluetooth with Apple products such as iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches to use either as direct remotes for the robot, or to create programs to control the actions of the Lego bots.

While Android devices have long possessed the ability to connect with these Lego kits, the Mindstorms EV3 is the first to work with Apple devices, as it now includes the all-important chip that helps the device to identify Apple products.

Along with the new chip, the Mindstorms EV3 kit includes four motors, five sensors, and two added infrared sensors that can pick up the location of all signals from any small infrared remote. Within the snakes “eyes” are sensors that will have the bot “attack” if it senses a body too close to its head.

Lego’s Mindstorms EV3 kit is priced at $350 and slated to hit shelves after June 2013. ■
