If there ever was a project that you shouldn’t try at home, but totally looks like something you’d have fun doing at home, this is it.
The folks at Photonicinduction have posted a video showing the data on a CD being completely wiped from existence by bolts of electricity.
And boy oh boy, does it look like a lot of fun.
Now, there are a couple of reasons why this is poses as significant danger. Electrocution, for one, is an obvious hazard here. Also, there are x-ray and ozone issues of course, too.
A bit more specifically, x-rays can be produced with voltages over 50KV in certain circumstances. To avoid the dangers associated with this demonstration, Photonicindicution set everything up in a well-ventilated area, and took measures to protect surrounding surfaces from possible damage caused by the 240,000-volt system.
In the video below, three demonstrations are recorded — two with CDs, and one with a DVD. The currents demonstrated vary between 10mA, 20mA, and 60mA. Do note in the latter demonstrations with the CDs, the hazardous effects that come with applying too much amperage to a dedicated source.
