$10 DaVinci media processor handles HD video at 30 fps
Processor doubles battery life, and development system is said to cut months off design time
Targeting applications such as digital cameras, IP video cameras, digital photo frames, and video security monitors, the TMS320DM355 DaVinci media processor consists of an ARM926EJ-S core, a video-processing subsystem, an MPEG-4-JPEG coprocessor, and peripherals. The easy-to-program chip and the DM355 Digital Video Evaluation Module are said to cut months off the development time for low-cost digital video devices with HD capability.
The chip can perform HD MPEG-4 encode or decode at 720p, 30 fps and JPEG encode or decode at 50 Mpixels/s. Combined, the media coprocessor and video-processing subsystem provide the equivalent of up to 640 MHz of digital-signal-processing performance, and up to 270 MHz of ARM-processing capabilities are still available.
The 13 x 13-mm BGA329-packaged chip has I2 C, SPI, and high-speed USB 2.0 OTG interfaces, and a 10-bit D/A converter. It consumes approximately 400 mW during HD MPEG-4 encoding, and only 1 mW of standby power. (From $9.75 ea/50,000—samples available now.)
