10-Gbit Ethernet switch chips feature high-performance routing

Chips have only 300-ns latency as a full-layer 3/4 router

The FM4000 series 10-Gigabit Ethernet switch chips feature high-performance routing and enable data center networks to scale into the thousands of nodes. They are complete layer 2/3/4 IP switch/routers with full line-rate performance on all ports and a total throughput of 360 Mpackets/s. The chips boast the lowest latency in the industry, 300 ns as a full-layer 3/4 router — performance that exceeds that of fabrics such as InfiniBand and Fibre Channel.

The devices come with up to 24-port density, 2 Mbytes of memory, and XAUI SerDes interfaces. When used in fat tree (Clos) network architectures the network can scale to 3,456 nonblocking nodes in three tiers of switching. They also have IPv4 and IPv6 routing to 16-K addresses, L2 to L4+ ACLs with deep inspection, chip cascades, virtual switch of Clos, rings, and meshes, and Converged Enhanced Ethernet. ($25 per 10-GbE portsamples available now; prod qty, 1st qtr 2008.)
