10 things to know about the $10 smartphone Wal-Mart is selling

Burner device is selling out fast — but why?

First spotted by Vice’s Motherboard publication, Wal-Mart is now selling $10 smartphones.

There hasn’t been much of a campaign built around the incredibly inexpensive device, so little is known about it. If you’re interested in purchasing a burner phone for personal use, or an inexpensive smart device for a child or elder member of the family, read on to learn 10 things about this mysterious new piece of technology on Wal-Mart shelves.

1. It’s not actually $10. The phone is actually cheaper, with a sticker price of just $9.82.

2. The phone is made by LG. That’s right, the same manufacturer which puts its name on significantly more expensive devices like the G4 and V10, is responsible for this inexpensive piece of equipment, referred to as Tracfone’s Lucky LG16.

3. The screen’s not that big. Actually, it’s a bit on the smaller side. At just 3.8 inches, it pales in comparison to today’s increasingly larger smartphones and phablets.

4. A camera is included. With a price of under $10, one would think certain hardware accessories will be left off, but that’s not the case with the Lucky LG16 — it comes with a 3-megapixel rear camera.

5. Comes with some memory too. 4GB to be exact, courtesy of the device’s microSD card.

6. It runs an Android operating system. Specifically, the KitKat version of the OS, which is two versions behind the latest iterations, Lollipop and Marshmallow.

7. Sorry, but no 4G LTE. It’s only 3G, which isn’t terrible, but does explain the lower price-point.

8. The phone’s not terribly slow. A 1.2GHz dual-core processor powers it, which isn’t top of the line, but enough to serve its purpose as a smartphone.

9. All of these specs are actually better than the original iPhone. 3.8-inch display, 3G and WiFi networking, and 3-megapixel camera, surpass those included on the original iPhone, which had a 3.5-inch display, Wi-Fi support only, and a 2-megapixel camera.

10. It’s sold out. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, but as of the time this article’s being published, there are no Lucky LG16s available for immediate purchase. For those in dire need of a burner phone, the Lucky LG15 is available which, by all accounts, appears to be the same as the newer version, and costs $9.82 as well.
