100-GHz sampling scope reveals hidden signals

100-GHz sampling scope reveals hidden signals

Designed for second-generation PCIe, SATA, XAUI, and 10GbE, instrument uses Eye Doctor virtual probing to simulate signals internal to latest receiver chips

To analyze and check compliance of fast interconnect schemes that use long serial-data patternsschemes such as second-generation PCI Express, Serial ATA, XAUI, and 10-Gbit Ethernetthe WaveExpert 100H sampling oscilloscope acquires, measures, and processes signals that can’t be physically probed using a simulation technique called Eye Doctor. Replacing previous instruments in the WaveExpert series, the scope is highly modular, supporting up to four optical or electrical channelswith 10 to 100-GHz sampling headsas well as clock recovery and serial pattern generation up to 13.5 Gbits/s.

The scope comes with TDR analysis software and full differential two-port S-parameter measurementsfeatures that allow characterization of cables, connectors, backplanes, and other devices. The optional Eye Doctor feature merges signal and channel responses to measure receiver tolerance and view equalized signals as they appear inside the receiver. Measured S-parameters can be combined with Eye Doctor analyses to perform stressed eye-pattern analysis and tests on equalized receivers.

The optional high-stability coherent interleaved sampling (HCIS) time base, with its 230-fs noise floor, lets the unit capture 2.5 Msamples/s. (Mainframe, $21,250; sampling heads, $5,897 to $52,500; HCIS, $16,950; Eye Doctor, $8,200available now.)
