16-bit MCUs double performance, memory size

Controllers feature 25-MHz clock and fast wake-up from standby

Taking as little as 4 mA running at 25 MHz (160 µA/MHz), and 1.5 µA in standby, MSP430F54xx MCUs enable longer battery life, or smaller batteries, or no batteries at all. The 16-bit processors yield 50% more processing performance and have double the flash and RAM of previous versions. They feature a wake-up time of less than 5 µs, with full status retention, from both standby and sleep modes.

The devices have up to 16 Kbytes of RAM and 256 Kbytes of flash. Their multichannel DMA permits data exchange with peripherals while the core remains in low-power modes and its 32-bit real-time clock uses only 1.5 µA in standby.

The chips have a 12-bit A/D converter, run from a 1.8 to 3.6-V supply, and come in 80- or 100-pin QFP packages. ($3.29 to $4.85 ea/1,000 — family samples available between now and August.)
