Able to replace a common 60-W incandescent bulb, the Definity omnidirectional LED A19 bulb for commercial/industrial applications will sell for under $30. Based on a normal usage (defined as 6 hours/day for 365 days/year) and an electricity cost of $0.10/kWh, energy savings will let the bulb pay for itself in less than two years.

The bulb, which is dimmable, delivers 850 lm and is rated for a life of 50,000 hours, which, under normal usage, would make it last almost 23 years. The bulb is said to have a higher lumen output than, and last twice as long as, a recently released 60-W equivalent A19 LED bulb from a major European manufacturer.

By virtue of it consuming just 13 W, the bulb is 75% more efficient than the 60-W incandescent bulb it replaces. Unlike compact fluorescent lamps, the bulb contains no mercury, is completely recyclable, and is “instant on.”

A version of the bulb will also be sold by The Home Depot retail chain under its EcoSmart brand. (Less than $30 — Definity available in January; EcoSmart available February on line, March in stores.)
