Do you ever miss hitting a button three times to type the letter C on the QWERTY keyboard or the clamshell look of the flip phone? Me neither, but LG thought some of us must’ve, because the company is bringing back the flip phone. But don’t worry, it’s not as old school as you think; this phone runs Android apps.
The company announced that the Gentile flip phone, which runs the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop, has been released. So how will it compete against the smartphones that it has fundamentally replaced? On the upside for this flip phone, it isn’t as big and bulky as current smartphones have grown to become. It can actually fit in your pocket and be used with one hand. But the reason smartphones have replaced flip phones is primarily because they provide us with a readily available computing device at the tip of our fingertips. They have better cameras, connect us fully with the Internet and modern world, and feature a ton of apps.
The Gentile isn’t a terrible investment for LG, however. It is compact, traditional, and carries the necessities of a smartphone OS, making it a useful option for children and seniors; I suppose it’s better that a 6-year-old have a flip phone than the latest tablet or iPhone.
As for right now, it is only available in Korea for $175. Some other features the Gentile possesses are a 3.2-inch (480 x 320 resolution) display, 1.1GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 3-megapixel camera and 4GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD card). It’s best feature yet? It has a 1,700 milliamp-hour (mAh) battery, which will last for days because it won’t be gulping power from running multiple apps, pictures, and games. Did you hear that? Days .
So what do you say? Are you trading in your smartphone for this “high-tech” flip phone?
