Eggtronic announced a new evaluation board (EVB) that enables engineers to reduce the size and cost of 240-W power delivery (PD) 3.1 applications while supporting ultra-fast charging with high efficiency. The SmartEgg 240-W PD 3.1 charger EVB offers a peak efficiency above 95% and operates at over 90% efficiency from light load to full load.
A single stage, combining zero voltage switching (ZVS) power factor correction (PFC) and quasi-forward isolated regulation, reduces bill of materials and key component size, compared to traditional PFC+LLC and PFC+Asymmetric half-bridge architectures. The platform delivers light-load energy savings of up to 50% and a power density of 21.9 W/in3 (1.34 W/cm3), supporting extremely compact charger designs.
Based on the SmartEgg AC/DC architecture, the 240-W PD 3.1 charger EVB incorporates mixed-signal, low-power Eggtronic Power Integrated Controller (EPIC) 2.0 IC controllers. It provides built-in protection against overpower, overvoltage, overtemperature, short circuits and brownouts. The EPIC controller, based on a 32-bit RISC-V core and high-performance digital and analog peripherals, incorporates a flexible internal structure, supporting multiple independent control loops of standard and proprietary power conversion architectures, Eggtronic said.
Based on the flexibility of the EPIC 2.0 controller, the EVB, available as a dual-port module, can be modified for any number of charging ports, supporting many buck converters. The primary EPIC IC on the secondary side adjusts all charging cases by distributing power to each port or full power to a single port via I2C communication. The power sharing can be customized.
