The Deskstar 7K1000 hard-disk drive delivers 1 Tbyte of storage and features a 3.0-Gbit/s SATA interface and a 32-Mbyte data buffer. The 3.5-in. 7,200-rpm drive has 148 billion-bits/in.2 max areal density and a 1,070-Mbit/s max data transfer rate.

The drive features a ramp load/unload design to increase shock protection and thermal fly-height control to maintain a consistent head position. The device has 8.5-ms average seek time, 5 platters and 10 heads, a 300-g for 1-ms pulse nonoperating shock rating, and 9-W idle power. ($399 each retail—available now.)
