45-nm quad-core Opteron processor yields 35% performance improvement
CPU also cuts power by 35% and improves virtualization performance
The Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor (8346/8384) series uses 45-nm technology and immersion lithography to achieve up to 35% higher performance, up to a 35% decrease in power consumption at idle, and superior virtualization performance. The “Shanghai” CPU has improved DDR2-800 memory support and a 6-Mbyte Level 3 cache to help speed memory-intensive applications.
The devices feature Rapid Virtualization Indexing, a tagged translation lookaside buffer, and HyperTransport Technology 3.02. They use the same footprint and package as the previous version.
The first series of processors has a 75-W ACP and runs at 2.3 to 2.7 GHz. Enhanced HE (55-W) and SE (105-W) processors are planned to follow in the 1st qtr. ($523 (8346) to $2,194 (8384) available now.)
