5-A buck micro-module regulator targets data converters

The LTM8028, a 1-mV output ripple µModule regulator powers data converters and high speed transceivers. The low output ripple minimizes random jitter in high speed data transceivers and improving bit error rate (BER) performance. A tri-state digital interface determines the device's output voltage, which is adjustable from 0.8 to 1.8 V in 50-mV increments. Output voltage regulation is ±1.5% accurate over temperature.

The µModule regulator combines a 36-V synchronous step-down switcher, powering a 5-A linear post-regulator in a 15 x 15 x 4.92-mm BGA package. When powering an analog-to-digital converter, tests showed a 13-dB improvement in spurious free dynamic range compared to a typical step-down regulator. Output noise is 40 µVRMS from 10-Hz to 100-kHz frequency range. It operates from -40° to +125°C.
