5 DIY tech pranks for April Fools’ Day

Forget whoopee cushions – go hi-tech this April 1st.

Looking for some fun tricks to pull on your friends and co-workers this April Fools’ Day? We’ve got you covered.

Upside down computer screen

This harmless joke is quick, easy, and definitely worth it if you’re looking to turn someone’s digital world upside down. If your suspect uses a PC, all you have to do to overturn their screen is hit the following keys on the keyboard: CTRL + ALT + down arrow (and CTRL + ALT + up arrow to flip it back). If this lucky person is a Mac user, go to “System Preferences” and click “Display” while simultaneously holding down CTRL + Option. You’ll see a menu called “Rotation” and this allows you to flip the display and save it. You’re welcome.

Tweak a grammar nerd’s autocorrect

This will drive the grammar geek in your life absolutely nuts. If you’re clever enough to work your way into their phone, you can mess with their autocorrect settings. Warning: this could get nasty.

Set a friend’s Facebook status privacy to “only me” so nobody will “like” their posts

Everybody wants to be liked, and in this social-media-dominated era, there’s a bizarre way of showing this: by clicking a button. On the plus side, things just got a whole lot easier for April Fools’ Day. One way to make someone feel completely ignored is to finagle your way into their Facebook account and set their status privacy to “only me.” This way, nobody will be able to “like” their posts. Ouch.

Change the status message of your office’s HP LaserJet printer

Work in an office? Well then this one might be for you. Although this isn’t a new trick in the book, it’s simple and sure to be amusing. If there’s a networked HP LaserJet printer in your office, you can change the status message that appears on its screen. Just telnet to the printer’s IP address on port 9100 and type the following:

@PJL RDYMSG DISPLAY=“YOUR MESSAGE HERE”

Once that’s in place, press enter and you’re done. Be sure to walk away like everything’s totally normal.

Block a co-worker’s mouse sensor with a piece of tape

This classic never fails, and it’s effortless and completely hilarious. Rip off a piece of tape, or even grab a post-it note, and place it on the underside of a co-worker’s mouse. They’ll be calling the IT department in no time.

Have fun and play nice!
