Whether it’s leftover sand in your pocket, or accidentally dropping your keys on the screen, chances are if you own a smartphone, you’ve accidentally scratched its surface once or twice . . . or 10 times over.
Some scratches are deep enough to affect the performance of the device, and if you find yourself in that situation, then you might want to consider having it serviced by a professional. For all other superficial marks, there are some pretty easy DIY methods you can use that require nothing more than some household items to complete.
1. Baby powder
Yup, you read that right. Baby powder works great at removing scratches from smartphones. Simply mix two parts powder and one part water in a bowl and stir until it forms a thick paste. Apply said paste to a clean, soft cloth and rub it onto the scratches in an ever-so-gentle circular motion. Once you’re sure the paste has made its way into the scratch, wipe the screen with a fresh, slightly dampened cloth to get rid of the excess material.
If you don’t have baby powder in the house, simply replace it with baking soda instead.
2. Toothpaste
Believe it or not, toothpaste works great at fixing scratched up phone screens. The trick, though, is to use actual toothpaste, and not anything that’s gel-based.
All you do is take a little dip of the paste and place it on cotton swab, Q-tip, or clean, soft cloth. Gently rub it over the scratch in circular motions, and continue until you see the scratch go away. After that’s complete, wipe the excess material away using a slightly dampened cloth.
3. Vegetable oil
It should be noted that vegetable oil really only works on small, hidden scratches, but when used appropriately, it looks great. Simply take a small drop and spread it out over the top of the scratches. Allow to soak and wipe away. That’s all it takes, and the scratch is gone!
4. Car scratch removal creams
This one might seem a bit peculiar, but if used in an appropriate amount (that is, you don’t slather it on the device), the cream does exactly what it’s supposed to do – remove scratches! Whether it’s Turtle Wax or 3M Scratch, just apply the cream to a clean, soft cloth and wipe over the scratch using a gentle, swirling motion. Clean away excess and enjoy your good-as-new-looking device again.
5. Egg (and potassium aluminum sulfate)
Okay, this one might require a trip to the store. According to Yahoo!, though, it is be worth it. The folks there report that by mixing egg whites with potassium aluminum sulfate, you can get rid of scratches with some pretty high effectiveness.
First thing you do is mix one egg white and one teaspoon of potassium aluminum sulfate (which you can purchase at any local drugstore) in a saucepan and heat to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. After that, soak the mixture into a clean microfiber cloth, before placing it on a piece of aluminum foil, and putting it into a 300-degree Fahrenheit oven until the cloth is completely dry. Take it out when complete, rinse in cold water for 20 to 30 seconds, and repeat three times before allowing the cloth to air dry for 48 hours.
After that, go ahead and use the cloth to remove scratches — you’ll be amazed with the results!
