If you’re the proud owner of a GoPro, you know it’s one of the best action cameras on the market right now. How long do GoPro batteries last? When it comes to the device’s battery life, which lasts about an hour and a half, let’s just say it leaves something to be desired. Below are six tips to help you extend your GoPro’s battery life.
How to make your GoPro battery last longer
Keep it off when not recording
Topping the list, this one’s obvious. When you have your GoPro turned on but aren’t recording, its battery life is slowly being eaten away. That being said, keep your GoPro turned off whenever you’re not recording in order to conserve battery life. You can even enable QuickCapture, a convenient feature that enables the camera to automatically start recording when you power it on.
Update the firmware
Chances are you have the latest firmware running on your GoPro, but there’s a possibility it hasn’t actually updated. Updating the firmware won’t only fix lingering issues, but it can also increase the battery life, thanks to any small fixes the company might have implemented.
You can update your GoPro by connecting the camera to your phone over Wi-Fi and using the GoPro app to update it.
Turn off Wi-Fi
Turning off the Wi-Fi to your GoPro can boost its battery life and make it last longer. Although it won’t allow it to last too much longer because the battery is already small, it can add an extra 10 to 15 minutes of recording time.
Reduce the recording resolution or frame rate
The fewer pixels and frames your GoPro has to record, the less energy it will use. Whenever possible, record at a lower resolution or frame rate.
For most GoPro action footage, 1080p at 60 frames per second is the standard. Turning it down a notch to 720p or leaving it at 1080p and setting it to 30 frames per second can help conserve battery life.
Turn off the LCD screen
The newest batch of GoPros come with a built-in LCD screen, making it more convenient to not only see what you’re recording, but also allow you to change settings more quickly. On the downside, those screens use up power, and if you need to save battery life, you’re better off sticking to the old-fashioned way of turning off the LCD screen and using the camera.
Bring along an extended battery pack or extra batteries
If you’d rather not compromise these features but still want better battery life, your best option is to buy an extended battery pack. Of course, these will add a little bit of bulk and weight to your setup.
Not an option? Try buying extra regular batteries that you can swap in and out whenever the battery on your GoPro runs low. It’s also wise to purchase an external battery charger to power up your extra batteries while you continue to record footage.
