64-core processor yields high performance/watt

Features fine-grain distributed caching and direct-to-cache coherent I/O

The TILEPro64 64-core processor is said to yield 35 times theperformance per watt of the Intel Quad-Core Xeon, and 1.5 to 2.5 times the performance of the 1st generation TILE64 device, with less than a 5% power increase. The chip operates at 700 or 866 MHz and takes 19 to 23 W at 700 MHz.

The device can handle H.264 HD encode for 10 streams of 1080p (baseline profile). The 8 x 8 grid of general-purpose 32-bit VLIW processor cores has a three-deep pipeline with up to three instructions per cycle, 5.6 Mbytes of distributed cache blocks, and up to 221 billion operations/s.

It has four 64-bit DDR2 memory controllers with optional ECC, two 10-GbE XAUI interfaces, configurable MAC or PHY mode, and two 4-lane PCIe interfaces in a BGA1536 package. A TilePro36 version is also available. (Ea/low qty: TILEPro36, $500; TILEPro64, $900 samples available 4th qtr.)
