Instead of going out and purchasing a lamp at your local home furnishings store, get crafty and make your own. Here are some DIY lighting ideas for you to dig into. You won't even need to be too electrically savvy (some are electricity-free).
1. Tin can lamp
Here’s a simple lamp you can make with two ordinary tin cans. Just poke some holes all over the cans, drill a hole for the light bulb and wire, then decorate and glue the cans together. Click here for a full set of instructions.
2. LED balloons
Create your own glow-in-the-dark balloons with some ordinary balloons and store-bought LEDs. Click here for a full set of instructions.
3. Phosphorescent light bulb
Here’s a light you can make that doesn’t even require electricity. The light looks exactly like a light bulb, but it's really just a solid mold of a traditional incandescent light bulb made of silicone infused with phosphorescent solution. Click here for a full set of instructions.
4. Marquee lights
You don’t have to head to the theater district to feel a bit of fame. Instead just make your own marquee with some wood, Christmas lights, and simple craft store materials. Click here for a full set of instructions.
5. Vodka bottle lamp
This one requires no prior electronics knowledge at all. As long as you can cut circles into a stack of coasters and can buy an LED push light, you’re set. (You’ll also need to make sure somebody around you has been drinking a lot of vodka lately because you’ll need an empty bottle.) Click here for a full set of instructions.
6. Cheese grater lamp
This lamp is as simple as wiring some light fixtures through a piece of wood and placing cheese graters over them like lamp shades. It’s a creative lighting alternative and also very simple. For more information click here.
Bonus:
7. Printer ink cartridge lamp
What do you do when your printer’s ink cartridge is empty? Turn it into a lamp, of course. This one you can’t make yourself, but you can buy it on Etsy.
Have fun being creative.
