The Caviar SE16 750-Gbyte Serial ATA hard-disk drive provides extended features for reliability and lower power consumption. One feature parks the recording heads off the disk surface during spin up, spin down, and when the drive is not operating, reducing head and surface wear and enhancing reliability.
The drive uses perpendicular magnetic recording and has an improved motor shaft mounting for reduced vibration. It also calculates an optimum seek speed to eliminate hasty movement of the actuator, so the head reaches the next target sector just in time, rather than rapidly accelerating and waiting, reducing power usage by more than 60%, compared to standard drives.
