8-A dc/dc converter offers high power in tiny package
Low-profile regulator can be mounted on the backside of a board
The LTM4608 is an 8-A dc/dc regulator system available in a small, lightweight module that can be mounted on the backside of a system’s printed-circuit board, freeing space on the top for other, larger ICs. The device has an on-board dc/dc controller, power switches, inductor compensation, and I/O bypass capacitors. It operates from a supply range of 2.375 to 5.5 V (6 V max) and regulates an output voltage from 0.8 to 5 V. The complete circuit is housed in a 9 x 15-mm LGA package with a 2.8-mm profile, weighing 1 g.
Multiple devices can be connected in parallel to deliver up to 60 W to a load while evenly sharing the load current. Each device features current-mode architecture for fast transient response, short-circuit protection, and line and load regulation. The chip also offers tracking for controlled ramp-up, ramp-down, and sequencing of the output voltage as well as output voltage margining for system level testing. A power good output signal is provided to indicate when the voltage is in regulation. The device also uses a phase locked loop circuit to synchronize to an external clock to reduce undesirable frequency harmonics. ($11.30 ea./1,000available now.)
