8 Back-to-School Gadgets

It’s never too soon to start crossing things off your back-to-school shopping list

With the heat of summer due to die down and the leaves bound to change soon, school is just around the corner. Stock up on gadgets like a USB flashdrive to keep track of papers and a smartpen that relives a class lecture. Technology is changing the way students learn today so here is your go-to back-to-school checklist, for the first-time college student or the boarding school veteran and every student in between.

Back to school gadgets

(1) USB Flashdrive

There’s no better way to guarantee a document is not lost, transport a paper to be printed in the library, or keep track of assignments for a class. Head to any office supply store and pick up a USB flashdrive in plain black or opt for something more creative like a drive in the shape of a pig or poodle. Price ranges on the size of flashdrive.

(2) Laptop Lock

For students, it’s likely that midterm week means making the library home and leaving only for class and food. For those quick study breaks, make sure to purchase a portable laptop lock. Laptop locks can range from $13 to $93, and when checking them out, keep in mind the size and style of the laptop.

(3) Echo Smartpen

This innovation makes it possible to fully replay a lecture, not only through a recording but with the notes taken simultaneously. The pen records the lecture and movements on a notebook page and can play the entire class back with the visual and audio together as soon as it’s plugged into a computer. The Echo Smartpen can be a little pricey, but if a student has a difficult time keeping up with a lecture then this is the perfect investment.

(4) E-Reader

Textbooks can rack up insane amounts of money with semesterly purchases. So whether it’s the Nook, Kindle, or iPad, e-readers are saving students and parents a great deal of money, time, and trouble. Aside from the money, an e-reader is much easier to carry than lugging around a stack of textbooks.

(5) Portable Power Pack

School days can be long and certain activities are unbearable without our smartphone or MP3 player. Kensington has come up with a solution for a long day and a short battery life of our electronics. The portable power pack can charge smartphones, iPods, and any PDA device giving up to 55 extra of play time on an iPod and 5 hours of talk time on a smartphone. Say goodbye to the phoneless lunch breaks and quiet study sessions.

(6) iRobot Roomba

Whether away at school or living at home, it’s normal to find that studies come before cleanliness. So instead of wasting precious studying time dusting and reach spots like under the bed or desk, set off the iRobot Roomba 410 device and come home to a beautifully vacuumed room.

(7) Wake-Up Light

A night light can ease the body into falling asleep, but using light in a different way can do the exact opposite. The Philips Wake-Up Light offers a calmer way to wake up by gradually getting brighter while an alarm set on an iPhone or iPod plays in the background. A detachable dock acts as iPod speakers and it includes built in nature sounds and FM radio. Perfect for the bedheads.

(8) Portable Projector

No more huddling over a small smartphone screen with housemates. Instead, the Optoma Pico Pocket Projector can project images from iPhones, iPods, and tablets onto a blank wall up to 60-inches. It’s the size of a cell phone and displays images with a resolution of 480 pixels by 320 pixels.

Technically speaking, all students really need is a pen and paper, but technologically, there are countless gadgets and innovations that make the student life much more enjoyable in this day in age. To keep up with the times check out the links of our suggested gadgets and happy studying!
