8K image sensor delivers wide area scanning

Teledyne e2v’s Snappy Wide 8K wide aspect ratio CMOS image sensor targets logistics vision systems applications.

Teledyne e2v has introduced Snappy Wide, a new 8K wide aspect ratio CMOS image sensor, targeting logistics vision systems applications where larger conveyor belts are commonly used. One single Snappy Wide sensor covers a large field of view (FOV), replacing multiple sensors.

The wide format covers the width of a conveyer belt and the full sides of palletized boxes, said the company. The sensor also can be used in industrial applications, such as smart factories.

Snappy Wide features include a small 2.5-µm global shutter pixel, designed with Teledyne e2v’s light pipe technology, providing 67 dB dynamic range in 10-bit and 12-bit ADC mode. The sensors have low read-out noise, important for barcode reading, with a good modulation transfer function (MTF) in any kind of environment and low dark current for high image quality even in very low-light conditions.

Unlike a square format CMOS image sensor, using Snappy Wide results in no wasted pixels, said the company. The new sensor can be used effectively as a high throughput 1D linear scanner (18,700 fps for dual line scanning). Users can adapt resolution, frames per second, performance, micro lens CRA value and pricing based on individual needs.

Housed in a 33 × 24.5-mm CLGA package size, Snappy Wide is available now in black and white and color versions, in 35-megapixel (MP) (8,192 x 4,320), 28-MP (8,182 x 3,500) and 16-MP (8,192 x 2,000) resolutions. Documentation, samples and kits for evaluation or development are also available.
