Terminators feed ECL output to 50-ohm input

Terminators join ECL output to 50-ohm input

PRL-550N and PRL-550P ECL terminators enable direct connections of -5.2-,
-4.5-, and +5-V-biased ECL outputs to ground-referenced 50-ohm instrument
inputs. The PRL-550N converts a ground-referenced 50-ohm input into a
-2-V-referenced 50-ohm input required by ECL circuits with a -5.2- or -4.
5-V supply voltage. The PRL-550P produces the +3-V-referenced 50-ohm input
required by ECL circuits with a +5-kV supply voltage. The 550N and 550P
terminators permit connecting ECL outputs to 50-ohm input instruments like
oscilloscopes, counters, and logic analyzers. Furthermore, the terminators
can function as adjustable -40- and +60-mA broadband dc offset current
sources, respectively. They can be inserted between two sections of 50-ohm
transmission lines for biasing semiconductor devices under test.
Open-circuit compliance voltages of the PRL-550N and PRL-550P are limited
to -5.75 and +5.75 V, respectively, by removable clamp diodes mounted in
the sockets. When connected to an ECL logic-level device, the output
voltage of the PRL-550N is defined by the ECL logic level, and the voltage
limit circuit is inactive. When the PRL-550P is connected to an ECL
device, however, the output voltage is defined by the ECL logic level only
if there is a 50-ohm termination to ground; otherwise, the output is
clamped to 5.5 V. A -12- or +12-V ac/dc adapter comes with the PRL-550N
and PRL-550P. ($195–stock.) Pulse Research Lab San Pedro, CA David Kan
