VXI-based arbitrary waveform synthesizer provides 16-bit precision

C-size module produces arbitrary and standard waveforms over two
independent channels

The DSB 8750 is a dual-channel, 16-bit arbitrary waveform synthesizer
that is fully compatible with VXI specification 1.3. A C-size module, it
occupies a single slot in a standard VXI chassis. Key to the 8750's
impressive 16-bit, high-speed (400-kHz update rate) performance is a very
accurate dual 16-bit D/A converter and a 33-MHz TMS320C30 digital signal
processor. The D/A converter has its own stable reference and two
distortion-suppressing output-deglitch amplifiers. Total harmonic
distortion plus noise of -100 dB ensures accurate signal reconstruction
over the range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Furthermore, channel-to-channel
crosstalk is better than -100 dB, and differential nonlinearity is less
than 3 ppm FSR. All control functions for the synthesizer, as well as
complex waveform calculations and digital signal processing, are
implemented by the DSP chip. Waveforms are generated by direct digital
synthesis (DDS) of signal by the digital signal processor based on
commands received from the VXI slot 0 controller or are loaded into the
synthesizer's on-board static RAM from the VXI memory. Furthermore, when
an application calls for it, the DBS 8750 can provide standard waveforms
like a function generator. Sine, square, triangle, noise, and dc are
available, all with 16-bit precision. Software integration efforts are
kept to a minimum with the 8750 because of its message-based device
architecture. This architecture allows serial word communication protocol
with any slot 0 controller using SCPI (Standard Commands for Programmable
Instruments). Rounding out the 8750's features are self-test capability
and an on-board dc/dc converter that provides isolated power to the analog
section of the module. ($3,990–10 to 12 weeks ARO.) Analogic Corp.,
