Switching hub gets single-mode capability
A single-mode option allows the company's LANplex 5000 switching hubs to
communicate at distances of up to 6 miles to create geographically larger
networks. The FDDI-based network uses a Fiber Concentrator module and an
Enterprise Access module to interconnect hubs, attach FDDI workstations,
and connect FDDI concentrators. The Concentrator module has four fiber
ports for the single-mode connections, while the Access module has two
such ports. The single-mode fiber-interface option complies with the ANSI
X3T9.3 standard for Category 1 single-mode fiber. The interface uses 9.
5-micron fiber and meets FDA Class 1 safety limits. ($4,500 ea/port–30
