Serial-to-IEEE-488 converter saves space

Serial-to-IEEE-488 converter saves space

The Serial488/p bus converter enables a PC or workstation with a serial
port to be linked directly to a plotter or printer with an IEEE-488 (GPIB)
interface. The converter, which measures only 2 x 2.3 x 0.9 in., is
claimed to be the smallest serial-to-IEEE-488 interface converter
available. Furthermore, it requires no external power supply, drawing its
power from the controlling computer's serial port. The converter is
particularly well suited for applications where data must be outputted via
HP ThinkJet printers or where benchtop space is in short supply. Users can
attach the converter directly to a printer's or plotter's IEEE-488
converter. Alternatively, users can connect the converter to the connector
by cable. The Serial488/p comes with factory-set parameters for
communicating with IEEE-488 printers or plotters, eliminating the need for
the user to set such parameters via dip switches. The Serial488/p's serial
(RS-232) communication parameters include a 9,600 baud rate, an 8-bit
ASCII data-bit rate, and a 1-bit stop-bit rate. The converter also has a
serial I/O buffer that accommodates up to 120 input characters.
