PC-compatible board yields four benchtop test instruments

PCI-GEN, a virtual instrument generator board for IBM PCs and
compatibles, furnishes the functions of four traditional benchtop
instruments. The board, and its accompanying software package, provides
the performance of a 2-MHz sweep/function generator, a 5-MHz pulse
generator, a 1-GHz universal counter/timer, and an arbitrary waveform
generator. It occupies a half-size board slot, making it suitable for use
in many laptop PCs. The board displays the front-panel controls of the
four instruments on the video monitor. The instruments can be operated
with a mouse or a keyboard. Setups can be stored to disk and later
recalled, making PC-GEN well suited to repetitive testing. The function
generator provides sine, square, and triangular waveforms, while the pulse
generator produces pulses ranging from 50 ns to 20 s. The universal
counter/timer measures frequency from dc to 10 MHz using gated or
reciprocal counting techniques. A 1-GHz, 50-ohm input is also provided.
And the arbitrary waveform generator provides customized waveforms whose
shapes are defined by up to 1,000 points in 10-ms steps. ($995–stock.)
