SMT 80C51 memory downloads code
The X88C64SLIC is a 5-V 8-Kbyte EEPROM with a glueless multiplexed
interface to an 80C51 microcontroller. It comes preprogrammed with code
that downloads user code through the serial port of the '51, then starts
execution. The self-loading integrated code (SLIC) remains, and can be
reused to load field upgrades. Thus all-SMT 8051 system boards can be
inventoried without code and without a socketed EPROM. SLIC can also load
temporary test programs during manufacture. Then the latest, or even
customer-specific code, can be loaded just before shipment. (24-pin
plastic DIP or PLCC, or SOIC, $8 ea/10,000–12 to 14 weeks ARO.) Xicor,
