Four scopes offer broad range of capabilities

Hewlett-Packard revamps midrange digital scope line

Four midrange portable digital storage oscilloscopes from Hewlett-Packard
provide the performance and features needed for testing most of today's
moderate-to high-speed digital designs. The DSOs, which are additions to
the HP 54500 series, are designated the HP 54520A, HP 54522A, HP 54540A,
and HP 54542A. The two-channel HP 54522A and the four-channel HP 54542A
provide simultaneous sampling at 2 Gsamples/s across all channels. The
two-channel HP 54520A and four-channel HP 54540A provide simultaneous
sampling at 500 Msamples across all their channels. Additionally, the HP
54540A offers simultaneous sampling at 1 Gsample/s across two channels.
All four scopes have a 500-MHz repetitive bandwidth, 32 Kpoints of memory
per channel, an MS-DOS compatible 1.44-Mbyte floppy-disk drive, time
tagging, FFT capability, sequential single-shot capture, and glitch
triggering down to 1-ns pulse width. Both the two-channel HP 54522A and
the four-channel 54542A offer a 500-MHz single-shot bandwidth on all
channels. The two-channel HP 54520A provides 125 MHz single-shot bandwidth
on both of its channels, while the HP 54540A provides 250 MHz single-shot
bandwidth on two channels or 125 MHz on four channels. FFT algorithms are
standard in all four HP 54500 series scopes. Other key features provided
in all the scopes include user control of the sample rate and record
length, waveform compare and mask generation, limits testing, failure
logging, measurement statistics, advanced logic triggering, and 23
automatic measurements. (HP 54520A, $9,500; HP 54522A, $13,500; HP 54540A,
$15,000; HP 54542A, $21,000–6 to 16 weeks ARO, depending on model.)
