Reflective cholesteric LCDs maintain
digital image without power

Addressing and exceeding industry demands for low-power displays, the
KDS 3077-xxx Infosign reflective cholesteric LCD (ChLCD) requires 141 mJ
for 3.2 s to generate a digital image that lasts for months after power
is removed. The technology used to make the ChLCD modules builds on the
strengths of LCD technology while significantly lowering energy requirements.

Although unsuitable for typical LCD applications that require video
speeds, the display represents a new type of technology that will find
use in power-stingy portable devices including pagers, phones, and PDAs.
Also, sign applications where information remains the same or is readily
changed by a computer can benefit from this technology.

Reflective cholesteric LCDs maintain digital image without power

Capable of maintaining a digital image without power for months,
the KDS 3077-xxx Infosign reflective cholesteric LCDs (ChLCD) represent
a new type of technology that will find use in power-stingy portable devices
including pagers, phones, and PDAs.

Unlike standard LCDs that rely on polarizers to achieve wide viewing
angles, the KDS 3077 features a 360° viewing cone without polarizers,
and at 90° exhibits a 25:1 contrast ratio. The device offers a reflectivity
of up to 38% of incident light and is offered in standard yellow-on-black
or other approved color combinations.

The display provides a resolution of 20 dots/in., arranged in 30 rows
and 240 columns and has overall dimensions of 345 x 55.1 mm. Operating
temperature ranges from 0° to 85°C.

The display's controller provides the appropriate signals for driving
up to 10 ChLCDs. Host interfacing is accomplished via asynchronous RS-232
serial communication. (Call manufacturer for price.)
