PowerSystems World
combines two events
Exhibition and conference brings power industry together Taking place October 27 through 31 in Rosemont, IL, at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, the Power Electronics Technology and Power Quality conferences combine for the PowerSystems World event. The conferences bring together the latest power devices and technologies, along with industry experts.
Among the many companies that will be attending PowerSystems World, Emco High Voltage (Sutter Creek, CA) will be exhibiting its Q series of isolated high-voltage converters. Available in case sizes as small as 0.125 in.3 , over 50 models provide up to 10,000 V, and feature low ripple and EMI. (Booth #1607)
The IRIS4009 integrated switcher from International Rectifier (El Segundo, CA) combines a control IC and a low-loss HEXFET power MOSFET in a single five-pin package for ac/dc power supplies up to 30 W. The device has an avalanche energy rating of 100 mJ, and is available in TO-220 and reduced-height TO-262 packages. (Booth #813)
Containing up to six individual power supply modules delivering up to 12 outputs in a single enclosure, the AS5 and AC7 series of ac/dc switchers from Autec Power Systems (Simi Valley, CA) provide up to 500 and 750 W, respectively. Offering outputs from 2 to 48 Vdc, the fan-cooled units include active surge protection and can be used in a load-sharing redundant configuration. (Booth #1133)

Passive components
Available in axial-leaded and slab configurations, noninductive bulk ceramic resistors from Kanthal Globar (Niagara Falls, NY) have no film or wire to fail. The devices suit soft-start/inrush-current-limiting, pulse waveform, snubber, and EMI/RFI transient-suppression requirements. (Booth #1523)
Suitable for lead-free alloy reflow soldering, the PXA series SMT solid polymer aluminum capacitors from United Chemi-Con (Rosemont, IL) are available in case sizes as small as 6.3 (D) x 5.2 (H) mm. The devices have a capacitance range from 10 to 1,000 µF and a voltage range from 2.5 to 25 Vdc. (Booth #1535)

A series of through-hole-mount current transformers from Standex Electronics (Cincinnati, OH) can be used to monitor ac currents of up to 20 A at 50 or 60 Hz. The devices provide 2,500 V of isolation between the power line and sensing circuitry, and their integral primary winding eliminates the jumper insertion required by other designs. (Booth #1127)
CT319 and CT320 Surface Mount Current Sense Transformers from Datatronic (Romoland, CA) feature a low-seated profile of 0.160 in. (4.0 mm) and 0.394 in. (10 mm), respectively. Key electrical parameters include an inductance of 100 to 11,000 µH, a resistance of 0.50 to 27.50 W max, and a minimum isolation voltage of 500 Vrms. (Booth #1728)
Designed to meet the needs of the inverter output, 5MPA Series film capacitors from Electronic Concepts (Eatontown, NJ) have a voltage rating of 530 Vac. The devices boast a dissipation factor of 0.1%, and can handle input to 83.2 A rms from 2 kHz to resonant frequency. (Booth #1325, Circle 766)
Active components and software
Seven new temperature- and current-sensing TrenchFETs from the Siliconix division of Vishay Intertechnology (Santa Clara, CA) include the industry's first 75-V current-sensing MOSFET. Available in a thermally enhanced D2 Pak package, the new devices have a thermal resistance up to 33% lower than standard D2 Pak packages, and up to 20% higher current-handling capability, up to 50% higher power dissipation, and maximum on-resistance ratings as low as 4.5 mW . (Booth #1036)
Promising to run applications cooler and to extend battery life in portable devices, MTrenchMOS n-channel MOSFETs will be shown by Philips Semiconductor (Sunnyvale, CA). Housed in TSOPs, the 12-, 20-, and 30-V devices offer a low RDS(on) and power dissipation of 1.4 W. (Booth #827)
The PolySwitch TSM600-250 overcurrent protection device from the Raychem division of Tyco Electronics (Menlo Park, CA) provides tandem resettable overcurrent circuit protection in high-density multiport line cards and other telecom network equipment. The device incorporates two matched PPTC components for balanced protection on tip-and-ring lines. (Booth #1433)
In the area of software, Magsoft (Troy, NY) will be exhibiting PSCAD, a CAD tool for real-time transient simulation of linear and nonlinear circuit and power systems. The company will also show Motor-CAD, a tool for 3-D thermal simulations of electric machines. (Booth #1412)
