Vitesse Enables Fiber-to-the-Home With Burst Mode Components for GE-PON (EPON) Systems

Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: VTSS) has announced the availability of the VSC7716 burst mode transimpedance amplifier (TIA) and the VSC7966 Laser Driver and Limiting Amplifier for Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (GE-PON). The VSC7716 and VSC7966 are the latest in a family of products from Vitesse designed for the Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) market. The two devices, when combined with a laser, provide a complete GE-PON Optical Line Termination (OLT) module solution enabling, for the first time, deployments of GE-PON systems that meet the rigorous requirements of the IEEE standard.

A Highly-integrated, Cost-competitive, GE-PON Solution

Designed for use in a GE-PON OLT, the VSC7716 not only meets today’s rigorous standard, but demonstrates performance needed for the next-generation of GE-PON systems. This device represents another industry first from Vitesse: the first commercially available burst mode TIA to simultaneous exceed the 20 km GE-PON specification for overload, dynamic range, and sensitivity.

GE-PON (aka EPON) is defined by the IEEE 802.3ah standard for FTTH applications. Operating at a 1.25 Gbps data rate, GE-PON utilizes the same packet framing and data encoding scheme from the Gigabit Ethernet protocol (IEEE 802.3z). This simplifies the design and deployment of systems and takes advantage of Ethernet economies of scale. The desire for end-to-end Ethernet networks, coupled with GE-PON’s high bandwidth and relatively low overall cost, has made this one of the fastest growing Internet access technologies.
