Xilinx, Inc. and 4i2i Communications, today announced the launch of the industry’s first High Definition H.264 video encoder in a single FPGA. Using Xilinx feature-rich programmable logic devices, 4i2i has developed a licensable intellectual property solution that provides a high definition H.264 encoder available in VHDL, Verilog or netlist formats. This optimized encoder, can be implemented in a single FPGA in either the Xilinx Virtex™ or Spartan™ FPGA families.

The encoder provides a highly integrated and cost effective solution which designers can utilize in a wide variety of video-based applications such as broadcast, video conferencing, video surveillance, and aerospace and defense applications.

The feature sets of the Virtex and Spartan FPGA families made Xilinx the obvious choice for collaboration as they provide the ideal platform to implement the highly complex algorithms required for High Definition H.264 encoding.
