AMCC Offers PowerPC 440SP and 440SPe Processors with Integrated RAID 6 Acceleration Hardware

Applied Micro Circuits announced new versions of its PowerPC 440SP and 440SPe processors with acceleration hardware to increase the processing rate of both RAID 5 and RAID 6 functionality.

Cost-effective Processors Offer Increased Redundancy and Protection for Critical Embedded and Networking Applications

Whereas RAID 5 provides for the recovery of data lost from a single disc drive failure, RAID 6 provides an added level of fault tolerance allowing for full data recovery in the event of two failed disc drives.

AMCC’s PowerPC 440SP and 440SPe processors have become widely accepted for their industry leading bandwidth, integration and RAID acceleration hardware support. Based on the PowerPC 440 superscalar core, the 440SPe is the first processor to offer three independent PCI Express interfaces and one PCI-X interface, meeting the high bandwidth demands for RAID controllers and SAN equipment.

Both the PowerPC 440SP and 440SPe RAID-enabled processors target host-attached, internal and external storage, storage area networking (SAN), and network attached storage (NAS) system applications.
