30 years of recognizing the industry's best products

Every year for 30 years now the editors of Electronic Products have given special recognition to selected products introduced during the previous year. Looking back over the history of the Product of the Year awards offers an interesting overview of several decades of product technology development.

30 Years of recognizing the industry’s best productsThe 1977 issue – the very first in which the awards were presented – is a case in point. “Microcomputers” and terminals were all the rage, with the micoNOVA from Data General, the SBC 80/10 from Intel, and the PDP-8/A from Digital Eqipment winning awards. Also winning were some logic analyzers – noted as the “glamour instrument of recent months” – from Biomation and Hewlett Packard.

Microprocessors and “memories” were big, including the Z-80 from Zilog, the M10800 4-bit slice processor from Motorola, and the 1802 8-bit CMOS microprocessor from RCA. Memory products included the MK 4027 4k RAM from Mostek and 2115/2125 1k MOS RAM devices from Intel.

Linear ICs honored with an award included the Ad582/583 sample-and-holds from Analog Devices, the 3.5-MHz HA-4741 quad op amp from Harris Semiconductor, and the SG1524 16-pin switching regulator from Silicon General. And in the area of power sources, awards were given to the 25-Ah Model 660 Lithium battery from Power Conversion, the Model 700 dc/dc converter from Burr-Brown, and power supplies from Lambda Electronics, Intronics, and RO Associates.
