SERENO SERIES: SERENO UM-1: WI-FI/GSM CONVERGENCE – SMALL FORM-FACTOR REFERENCE DESIGN

Based on Quorum's Sereno QS2000 transceiver, the Sereno UM-1 is a clam-shell form-factor reference design that has the features and performance of GSM/Wi-Fi device.

The overall performance of the QS2000 is designed to meet the manufacturing requirements for the high volume handset market, with minimal calibration, small number of components and high production margin on key specifications.

Developed in conjunction with industry leading Cellular and WLAN partners, the UM-1 hardware platform is capable of UMA or SIP modes of operation for VoIP. It is able to support data rates of 11Mbit/s or 54 Mbit/s over a WLAN network (802.11b/g), concurrently with a cellular network (GSM/EDGE). In addition to UMA compliance, the UM-1 reference design implements a production capable handset able to support IMS standards.

The UM-1 is based on the groundbreaking Sereno QS2000 single-chip CMOS transceiver and represents the wireless industry’s most integrated solution for multi-mode WLAN/Cellular applications. The QS2000 integrates Quorum’s QMAT GSM/WiFi co-existence technology that enables simultaneous operation of cellular and Wi-Fi. Quorum’s co-existence technology requires no isolation between the cellular and Wi-Fi antennas and enables both antennas to be co-located for optimum performance in the handset. It also allows full transmission power in WLAN operation during GSM operation. This extends the range by 5-6 times for VoWi-Fi applications.

The QS2000 integrates all of the transceiver functionality for quad-band GSM/EDGE and 802.11b/g. The GSM/EDGE transmitter requires no additional matching components or RF filters. The receiver supports Zero-IF and Near Zero IF operation and consumes only half the power of competing GSM only devices. This extendes the talk time for the phone in GSM mode by 10%. In Wi-Fi mode the QS2000 uses direct up and down conversion for ease of use and improved RF performance.
