Video chip provides a 110-dB dynamic range so it can adjust to light much like the human eye

With its 110-dB dynamic range, the OV10620 HDR CMOS color image sensor aims to satisfy mass-market automotive applications like backup/rearview/blind-spot cameras, lane-departure warning and guidance systems, and forward-looking features like headlight autodimming. It also suits security apps such as high-performance CCTV and IP cameras.

Proprietary HDR technology lets the imager function much like the human eye under quickly changing light conditionsfrom bright sunlight to dark shadows. Able to capture and simultaneously process image data, the device rapidly switches to HDR mode to handle extreme variations of bright and dark conditions within the same scene, and automatically switches back to non-HDR mode when conditions return to normal.

The single-chip sensor boasts light sensitivity up to 1,000 nm (near IR), has 6 x 6-µm pixels, and comes in versions with a 1/3-in. wide-VGA (768 x 492) and a 1/4-in. VGA (640 x 480) image array operating at 30 fps at full resolution, or 60 fps at QVGA (320 x 240) resolution. It offers YUV or RGB raw output and can perform at full dynamic range in either color or black and white.

The –40° to 105°C device comes in standard QFP, CLCC, and CSP packages. (Samples and evaluation boards, available now; prod. qty, 3rd qtr.)
