The CeeLite 7501 illumination panelThe CeeLite 7501 illumination panel is a tough and flexible flat light emitter that can deliver 7,500K white light at up to 200 nits in a thin form factor conformable to nearly any surface, indoors or out. We spoke to CTO H.P. Huang to get the inside story on this Product of the Year award winner. The inspiration“The basis of light-emitting capacitor (LEC) technology lies in electroluminescence (EL), and we saw the shortcomings of EL, but also the potential for it to become a sustainable technology. Determined to improve EL and explore its potential, we brought together a team of scientists with expertise in physics, chemistry, materials, and electronics. In 1998, the team began work to transform EL and their R&D led to the commercial introduction of LEC technology in 2005.”Collaboration“In 2004, CeeLite acquired Rilite as its wholly owned research and development and manufacturing subsidiary which provided critical elements—design, chemistry, materials, and manufacturing processes—to achieve the high-quality surface illumination of LEC technology. Once LEC technology was commercially-ready, CeeLite joined forces with Osram Sylvania to launch the Phosphors by Sylvania co-branding program, which provided credibility to the CeeLite brand as it was virtually unknown at that time. In 2007, CeeLite exclusively licensed Eastman Encapsulation Technology to create the next generation of LEC panels.”A little humor“Believe it or not, what we are about to describe has happened more than once! Picture this. A customer calls CeeLite technical support claiming that their LEC panels do not work. After some basic troubleshooting, the salesperson asks the customer to e-mail a picture of the installation. Upon viewing the pictures, it becomes very obvious what the problem is…the customer is looking at the wrong side of the LEC panel while the other side is beautifully illuminated.” ■Product of the Year Story Behind the Story:
