Single-chip GPON SoC enables fast triple play
G.894-compliant device integrates CPU, DSP, and data path engine
Targeting high-speed fiber-to-the-home, the MSC7120 is said to be the industry’s first complete Gigabit Passive Optical Networking (GPON) system-on-chip. The device integrates a 32-bit 266-MHz CPU, a 178-MHz DSP, and a data-path engine to deliver a full GPON subsystem.
GPON provides 2.5-Gbit/s downstream and 1.25-Gbit/s upstream data rates at distances up to 60,000 ft. The 456-pin PBGA-packaged chip uses less than 2 W and includes dual 10/100/1000 Ethernet MACs.
Development tools, RTOS support, a reference design, software building blocks, and application-specific software for the chip are available. (Less than $30 ea/prod qty—samples available now.)
