Scalable for LCDs with screens from 1 to 50+ in. diagonal, modular edge-driven LED-based backlights can reduce the cost, thickness, and power consumption associated with direct-illumination solutions using an LED array. White or RGB LEDs are embedded along one or more edges of the panels, which are made from sheets of optical plastic with up to 2,800 MicroLens proprietary micro-optical elements per square centimeter engineered into it for optimal light extraction.
Available starting with a thickness of less than 0.5 mm, the edge-driven backights are very durable owing to their construction, which along with the reduced power consumption suit them for use in portable devices and other rough-use products. Also useful for keypad or other flat rear-illumination applications, the devices are available with a flex circuit or pc board with connector. (From less than $1 ea/large qty—available now.)
