Fully integrated optical cable is industry’s first for data centers

20-Gbit/s EOE cable provides 10 times the transmission distance over copper

The Zlynx optical cable is presented as the industry’s first fully integrated electrical-optical-electrical (EOE) cable designed for connecting enterprise data centers and high-performance computer clusters. Capable of 20-Gbit/s transmission in both directions and 5-Gbit/s duplex 4-channel data transmission up to 100 m, the EOE cable assemblies push interconnect distances 10 times further than copper while eliminating weight, interference, and flexibility concerns.

The optical cable uses 3.3 V supplied from the electrical port connector, and typical power consumption is 1 W per connector. Pre-production units are available, and general availability is in the 2nd quarter of 2007. (Contact Marco Ghisoni for pricing—pre-production units available now.)
