Power analyzer eases testing involving complex dc signals
First-of-its-kind instrument performs sophisticated measurements without the need for programming
A new breed of instrument, the N6705A dc power analyzer integrates up to four dc-power-supply modules with the functions of a DMM, oscilloscope, arbitrary waveform generator, and datalogger. Yet despite its broad capabilities, it provides an easy-to-use interface with all functions available from the front panel, so that it isn’t necessary to remember complex setups or rely on test programs to get results.
The instrument can be configured with dc power modules totaling up to 600 W, using any of 21 modules previously introduced for the N6700 modular power system, and each module’s output can be modulated using an integrated arbitrary waveform generator. With output speeds of up to 160 μs per step-voltage change and a bandwidth up to 5 kHz, the unit can generate high-power dc transients or simulate line ripple.
Using the built-in DMM, oscilloscope, and datalogger capabilities, output voltage and current can be measured and stored in a 64-Mbyte internal memory. For increased storage, data can be exported using the instrument’s USB port, as can test setups. (An option removes the port for high-security apps.)
The instrument complies with the LXI class C specification and can be remotely operated from any browser using its built-in Web page. (Analyzer, $6,500; modules, $450 to $2,250 each—available now.)
