Digital power controllers enhance system management

Multi-output, multiphase controllers make power systems more adaptable and more efficient

The four-output, multiphase UCD9240 power system controller is fully configurable via a GUI for monitoring, control, and management of dc/dc point-of-load conversion. The device implements PWMs with 250-ps resolution and is said to improve efficiency up to 30% during light load conditions.

The 64-pin QFN-packaged chip performs full-digital loop control with switching frequencies of up to 2 MHz and supports up to 100 PMBus interface commands. Supply current is as low as 40 mA during operation.

The controller has a phase management feature that enables a supply to operate at high efficiency over the full range of the load and allows the user to turn on or off phases. It also allows the user to optimize the loop response for the operating condition and meet acceptable transient response over the load range.
