Housed in a 1.3 x 2.1-mm 15-ball CSP, the SMB139 digital programmable battery charger IC operates from an input of 4.35 to 6.5 V—ideal for either USB or ac adapter power sources. Ensuring long battery life when not connected to a dc power source, the reverse leakage current is less than 2 µA.
All charging parameters—precharge/fast-charge/charge termination current, cell float/pre-charge voltage, battery temperature/timer safety limits—are configurable via the I2 C/SMBus interface. The SMB139 can be programmed either dynamically (real-time using volatile registers), by a microcontroller and software, or statically (preprogrammed using nonvolatile registers). The part also integrates input/output overvoltage, short-circuit, and thermal protection circuits. ($0.85 ea/10,000—available now.)
