Magnetically switched liquid photonic crystal creates adjustable color

The creation of a magnetically adjustable liquid photonic grating is an interesting development and may provide an alternative to other reflective display technology based on variable mechanical photonic lattices such as the Qualcomm’s iridescent Interferometric Modulator (IMOD) technology and the research done on photonic crystal gel at the University of Toronto in 2003.

Surface antennas conform to any shape

Recently developed Holographic Artificial Impedance Surfaces–or Textured Impedance Surfaces, for short–are surface-coating materials from HRL Laboratories (Malibu, CA) that enable any object to become a Tx/Rx antenna. Constructed of thin sheets of dielectric with small metal patterns on them, the materials have a metal backing and can be applied to metal surfaces.
