White-LED drivers deliver top efficiency in tiny packages
Parts achieve 92% efficiency in a 2 x 2-mm footprint
Achieving up to 92% efficiency while driving a string of two to six white LEDs, the MAX8901A/MAX8901B white-LED drivers are offered as the smallest and highest-efficiency devices of their kind. The parts come in 2 x 2-mm TDFN packages and offer a fixed 750-kHz typ switching frequency, enabling the use of 1-µF input and 0.1-µF output capacitors.
With the LED current proportional to the PWM duty cycle, the MAX8901A uses a direct-PWM input to regulate LED intensity, while the MAX8901B uses single-wire serial-pulse dimming, which reduces LED intensity in 32 linear steps. Full-scale LED current for serial-pulse dimming is 24.75 mA, and each step is 0.75 mA.
The parts also feature soft-start, input overvoltage protection, LED overvoltage protection, undervoltage lockout, and thermal shutdown. In addition, the parts consume only 0.1 µA in shutdown mode. (From $1.25 ea/1,000—available now.)
