LEDs lay claim to ‘world’s smallest’ title
Available in a range of colors, devices free up space in handheld electronics
Said to be the smallest LEDs in the industry, PicoLED-mini series surface-mount LEDs measure a mere 0.6 x 0.3 x 0.2 mm, 70% smaller than their precursors. The LEDs, which are available in seven colors and white, permit designers to reclaim board real-estate in handheld devices with, say, matrix displays, so they can add features or reduce overall device size while providing a pleasing visual experience.
The color lineup consists of two reds (620 and 630 nm, typically), orange (605), yellow (590), yellowish green (572), green (560), blue (465), and white. With a 20-mA forward current, typical brightness ranges from 130 mcd for yellow to 13 mcd for green, with white at 71 mcd.
Viewing angle is approximately 60 with 80% relative brightness, typical forward voltages are 2.0 to 2.9 V, and power dissipation ranges from 50 to 66 mW. The devices use a four-element (AlGaInP) construction to prevent brightness degradation as well as ensure reliable long-term use. ($0.65 ea/sample qty–samples available now; prod qty October.)
