Protection device achieves unmatched Ethernet performance

Active part combines system-level EMC compliance and surge protection

Part of AS1600 family of active EMI suppression devices, the AS1602 provides what is presented as an unparalleled combination of system-level EMC compliance and surge protection for Ethernet applications—greater-than-10-dB common-mode suppression and ±25-kV ESD protection—without impacting data transmission speeds. The device comes in an RoHS-compliant 16-pin QSOP and is an alternative to traditional solutions that need external passive components, which can add significant performance-degrading parasitics in applications such as VoIP phones, security cameras, WAPs, set-top boxes, networked printers and appliances, and desktop and laptop computers.

The AS1602 is placed between the Ethernet PHY and the line transformer, which preserves the integrity of the Ethernet signals by providing very low common-mode impedance while maintaining high differential impedance and low differential capacitive loading. The device suppresses common-mode noise in both directions, increasing the system’s immunity to common-mode noise coming from the Ethernet cable and preventing emission of common-mode noise to the same cable.

Other features include single-supply operation (3.3 or 2.5 V), 90-mW power consumption, and an operating temperature range from 40 to 85C. (AS1602, $1.60 ea/1,000—available now.)
